With a new round of climate talks set to open in Durban later this month, Canada is once more under scrutiny.

“Are you going to follow the United States, are you also going to become a serial non-ratifier of any agreements?” asked Mohau Pheko, the South African high commissioner to Canada, in an unusually harsh criticism on 14th November.  South Africa wants to avoid being the host at the final collapse of global climate talks, but pressuring Canada is unlikely to work — far from ‘following’ the U.S., we appear to be leading our own little parade to nowhere good.  At present, we seem certain to continue our stupid pretense that climate change is not important.  Now, if only we could find a way to get our messy tar sands oil to market…. Anybody got an unused pipeline?
