Canadian mining companies misbehave and the Canadian government creates a toothless regulator.

Canada is home to about 75 per cent of the world’s mining and exploration companies, but is also among the worst offenders abroad, according to a leaked 2009 report commissioned by industry group Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada.  Now a 31st October report from the CBC focuses on heavy-handed treatment of people who are ‘in the way’ of overseas mining operations.  But corporations that treat people in a cavalier way are unlikely to treat the environment more sensitively.  Changing the way we do business has to start somewhere if we are ever going to change our attitudes to the natural world.
